As you know, this column is all about the comings and goings around our beloved Sherman Oaks – but this month, let’s shake things up a bit! Instead of focusing on the new kids on the block or the businesses we’ve had to say goodbye to, I thought it would be fun (and heartwarming!) to shine a spotlight on those neighborhood staples that have stood the test of time. You know the ones – they’re woven into the fabric of our community, still going strong, and still making Sherman Oaks feel like home. Let’s start with a true local legend: Baxter Northrop Music Company (14534 Ventura Blvd) which first opened its doors in 1906 – yes, you read that right! That makes it one of the oldest businesses in all Southern California, and lucky for us, it’s nestled right here in Sherman Oaks. This iconic shop offers everything from sheet music and instruments to private music lessons for all ages. It’s a beautiful time capsule of musical history – and a thriving one at that. I even tried to pick up the saxophone there not too long ago (spoiler alert: I may not be the next Coltrane, but I gave it my best shot!). Whether you’re a seasoned musician or just dabbling, Baxter Northrop is a place filled with rhythm, memories, and heart. Now, if you’re looking to tune up more than your musical chops, you might want to check out Alpha Man (14044 Ventura) a sleek new addition to The Boulevard. This modern men’s health clinic is all about helping guys feel their absolute best – from testosterone replacement therapy and weight loss to boosting energy and overall vitality. Think of it as a wellness concierge for men, offering personalized, doctor-supervised care with one goal: getting you back to your peak. Because feeling strong and healthy never goes out of style. And speaking of strength… let’s talk about ABC Boxing Club (14006 Ventura) – aka Adrenaline Boxing Club. This high-energy gym is serving up seriously powerful workouts with a Russian-style boxing twist. They’ve got programs for men, women, and even kids, so the whole family can get in on the action. Whether you’re training like a champ or just looking to shake up your fitness routine, ABC packs a punch (pun absolutely intended!). Now, after all that exertion – mental, physical, or both – you’ve earned serious relaxation. May I suggest a trip to Gaaya’s (13634 Ventura) the new massage haven right next to the UPS Store near Woodman (where The Massage Place had a great 15-year run). Gaaya’s offers luxurious deep tissue massages and calming vibes in a fresh, welcoming space. It’s the perfect post-workout (or just because!) treat for tired muscles and stressed-out minds. So, this month, let’s raise a toast – to the newcomers, the neighborhood veterans, and all the spots that make Sherman Oaks the vibrant, dynamic, and ever-evolving community we love. Whether you’re learning to play sax, getting in shape, or just treating yourself to a little self-care, there’s something here for everyone. And remember, in Sherman Oaks, the best stories aren’t just about comings and goings … sometimes they’re about those who stay and continue to shine

For years now, Studio City has been the go-to destination for sushi lovers, offering a dazzling array of high-quality sushi restaurants on nearly every block. What once started with just a handful of sushi spots – most notably the enduring Terra Sushi – has blossomed into a culinary hotspot where fresh fish and expertly crafted rolls are the norm. Recently, however, Sherman Oaks has been stepping up its game, emerging as a worthy rival to Studio City’s sushi supremacy. The neighborhood has welcomed an impressive lineup of sushi spots, including the recently opened Karma Sushi and Aria Sushi on Ventura Blvd. These newcomers join the ranks of established favorites like The Note, a sushi bar owned by the same team behind the acclaimed Augustine Wine Bar, and countless other sushi gems lining the Boulevard. Last week, my wife and I finally made it to The Joint, a long-standing but often overlooked sushi destination. While I’d known about it for a while, I hadn’t yet experienced its unique split concept – a top-tier smoked fish market on the right side (open only during the day) and a minimalist yet inviting hand roll bar on the left. Let me tell you – the hand rolls were phenomenal. Each one was carefully crafted and served individually on a simple white napkin, allowing me to savor every bite without distraction. I devoured six rolls, each one better than the last, and was pleasantly surprised to find the prices quite reasonable – possibly even lower than what you’d pay for six rolls at the renowned Katsuya. I’ve heard rave reviews about the fish market as well, so a return visit to pick up some fresh seafood is definitely in order. Meanwhile, the Sherman Oaks dining scene continues to expand beyond sushi. A brand-new restaurant, DAISY, is set to open its doors on Ventura Blvd. This innovative Mexican restaurant and margarita bar will be open from 5 pm to midnight, offering a fresh and inspired take on traditional Mexican cuisine. The brains behind this venture are the award-winning team behind Mirate in Los Feliz, who are bringing their signature style and expertise to reinvent the modern-day cantina. DAISY promises a “GASTRO-CANTINA” experience, deeply rooted in Mexican culinary tradition while embracing creative innovation. If you have a penchant for tiki-inspired cocktails and bold, flavorful Mexican fare, DAISY might just become your new favorite spot. On a less exciting note, a disappointing experience with Donny’s Breakfast Spot on Ventura has left a sour taste. In last month’s newsletter, I highlighted Donny’s as a promising new breakfast destination and even arranged for it to be SOHA’s Restaurant of the Month for March. My wife personally met with Donny, and he enthusiastically agreed to the feature. However, after multiple follow-ups – both in person and via phone – he completely ghosted her. Ignoring calls and commitments is simply not the way to build community trust. If he had changed his mind, a simple heads-up would have sufficed. Instead, his radio silence speaks volumes. Let’s hope his restaurant doesn’t vanish just as suddenly as his willingness to engage. With so many exciting new dining options popping up in Sherman Oaks and Studio City, it’s clear that this area remains one of LA’s most dynamic culinary scenes. Whether you’re craving top-tier sushi, innovative Mexican fare, or a solid breakfast spot (hopefully one with better follow-through than Donny’s), there’s no shortage of fantastic choices to explore.

Exciting Changes and Comebacks on Ventura Blvd Remember those evenings at Augustine Wine Bar, where you could unwind with a carefully selected glass – or perhaps a bottle – of exquisite wine, paired with delicious appetizers and great conversation? Sadly, in May 2023, a devastating kitchen fire swept through the beloved wine bar, destroying much of its prized vintage collection and forcing it to close its doors. But here’s the good news: Augustine is back! They’ve reopened their doors, once again pouring some of the most beautiful wines in town. You can stop by Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 10 pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 5 pm to midnight to sip, savor, and celebrate their return. If you’re like me, you’re thrilled to have this neighborhood gem back in business. And speaking of comebacks, it looks like Mark’s Garden is making strides toward reopening as well. Fingers crossed that we’ll see them back soon! A Colorful New Addition: Green Qween If you’ve walked past Petit Trois on Ventura Blvd recently, you may have noticed the striking artwork that’s transformed the adjacent building. The bold, colorful mural caught my eye, and now the doors have officially opened to reveal Green Qween, a cannabis dispensary that’s more than just a retail shop – it’s a community-driven space with a mission. Green Qween, which first launched in May 2022, is a queer-owned dispensary dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ brands. They honor queer history and identity through the products they sell, the local artists they showcase, and their community-based philanthropy, partnering with organizations like DTLA Proud. Inside, you’ll find everything from cannabis-infused cookies, gummies, and chocolates to sodas and shakes. And since they’ve just opened their Sherman Oaks location, they’re offering 10 to 40% discounts on select products. A Fresh Take on Relaxation If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for a great massage spot. For years, my wife and I enjoyed unwinding at The Massage Place on Ventura Blvd near Woodman. It was a go-to for relaxation, and it thrived there for a long time. Now, I was surprised to see that it has transformed into Gaaya’s Massage Therapy, but it’s still in the same location. I’m eager to check it out, though I have to admit, it’ll be tough not to default to our usual spot. One thing’s for sure – Sherman Oaks is spoiled for choice when it comes to great massage places! A Neighborhood on the Rise With longtime favorites returning and exciting new businesses bringing fresh energy to Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks is experiencing a welcome revival. Whether you’re rediscovering old haunts or exploring new ones, it’s great to see the neighborhood buzzing with life again. Have you visited any of these places yet? Let’s raise a glass (or book a massage) to the exciting changes in our community!

What a Year This Has Been – Rebuilding, Reflecting, and Reaching for Solutions As 2024 comes to a close, it’s incredible to reflect on how far our communities have come since the shadow of COVID-19 loomed large over our lives. The streets of Sherman Oaks, once eerily quiet, are now bustling with energy again. Vibrant new restaurants and stores have opened their doors, filling the neighborhood with the hum of possibility and the aroma of freshly baked goods. Life, it seems, has finally returned to something resembling normal. Yet, as we savor this rebound, we are reminded that challenges persist. A lot of the businesses in the area are having a difficult time making ends meet. Homelessness remains a visible and pressing issue on our streets – a stark reminder of work still to be done. These individuals – mothers, fathers, veterans, and youth – are not just statistics. They are part of the fabric of our community, and finding compassionate, sustainable ways to address their needs is a challenge we must rise to meet. In tandem with these concerns, a subtle but undeniable rise in crime has prompted many to reflect on how we can better protect ourselves and each other. But here’s the thing: protection isn’t just about locking doors or installing cameras. It’s about building bridges, not walls, within our communities. It’s about leaning into the connections we’ve made, reigniting a spirit of solidarity, and fostering a neighborhood culture where looking out for one another is second nature. A Call to Action – Start a Neighborhood Watch If your neighborhood doesn’t already have a watch program, now is the time to start one. Imagine a network of neighbors who know each other by name, who check in regularly, and who take collective responsibility for their shared space. Neighborhood watches aren’t just about safety – they’re about community. They’re about turning strangers into allies and allies into friends. Starting one is simpler than you think. Gather Interest – Begin with a small group of neighbors who share your concerns. Organize Meetings – Discuss common goals and identify areas of concern. Work with Local Authorities – Partner with our amazing senior lead police officers for guidance and resources. Stay Active and Informed – Use social media groups/apps to communicate, share updates, and stay connected. This year has reminded us that progress isn’t just about returning to what we had before – it’s about creating something even better. By addressing the challenges of homelessness, crime, and community building with empathy and action, we have the chance to make Sherman Oaks not just a place where life feels normal again, but a place where it truly thrives. So, let’s start the new year on a high note – supporting one another, solving problems together, and stepping into 2025 with hope, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to our shared home.

Sherman Oaks is leveling up its game, and who would’ve guessed it’s becoming quite the posh little haven? Believe it or not, we now have not just one, but two stores exclusively dedicated to caviar! Yes, you heard that right – caviar! One of these gems is a chic caviar boutique nestled on Ventura Boulevard near Woodman, and now Pava Caviar has opened its elegant doors closer to Fulton on Ventura at 13259 Ventura Blvd. Caviar aficionados rejoice—our once humble neighborhood is stepping into some seriously fancy territory. www.pavacaviar.com I’m loving this transformation! Back in the day, if I ever craved caviar (which, let’s be honest, was pretty rare), I’d have to make the trek to Gelson’s or Grandma’s deli in Studio City. But now? We’re covered – caviar cravings can be satisfied locally with no extra travel required. Talk about convenient decadence! On the flip side, though, if you were a fan of Public School 818’s tasty bites, I’ve got some bittersweet news. Sadly, they’ve closed their doors. But don’t despair, because as one door closes, another one opens, and I will keep you posted soon on who is moving into their spot! Panini Kebab Grill has moved in at Fashion Square, right across from the parking structure. If you’re like me and can’t resist a good panini, this is definitely a silver lining worth savoring. Speaking of exciting new arrivals, remember Red Window Coffee? That tiny but beloved coffee hut at the front of the Iroha parking lot has made the big leap to a full-fledged brick-and-mortar shop! It’s now located in Sherman Oaks at 13365 Ventura Blvd, near Menchie’s. They started small but quickly grew, winning over locals with their perfectly brewed coffee and delicious pastries. It’ll be fun to see how this cozy spot evolves in its new home. Here’s hoping they keep thriving! Have you spotted the stunning new building at 13460 Ventura near Sunnyslope? Three new businesses are setting up shop there, each offering a little something special. First, there’s LASH, likely catering to those who want to perfect their lash game with extensions, lifts, and perms. Then we have The Alchemist Salon, a welcoming haven where getting your hair done feels more like a laid-back hangout with friends. Their motto? Sit back, unwind, and get pampered. And finally, there’s Lynx Coffee, which aims to become your next go-to spot for that perfect cup of coffee. With so many new coffee brands popping up, it’s all about finding the one that hits the spot for you! As for Donny’s Spicy Wings and Fries, and Donny’s Breakfast Spot located between Nagle and Dixie on the south side of the street, it seems like these much-anticipated openings are still on pause for now. Fingers crossed they’ll sort things out soon, because who doesn’t love a good local wing joint? Our little slice of the Valley is always changing, always growing, and that’s what makes it so exciting. If you hear of anything new or noteworthy, don’t hesitate to share it with me – I love keeping up with the pulse of our vibrant community!

In the realm of surprises, there are moments that leave you scratching your head, and this one certainly did! Imagine my shock when I discovered that Jalapeño Pete’s, 11618 Ventura Blvd, the vibrant Mexican eatery with its signature large blue doors on the south side of Ventura in Studio City, has officially closed its doors for good. This place was always bustling with people and seemed to be doing brisk business, so this news was a real curveball. You just never know. Speaking of surprises, let me tell you about my recent experience with Go Greek, 12930 Ventura Blvd, the yogurt spot tucked away in the Coldwater Collection, right behind Western Bagel. As a self-proclaimed frozen yogurt enthusiast, I was ecstatic to finally try their much-talked-about Greek frozen yogurt. So, off I went, eagerly ordering two small cups – one vanilla, one chocolate – plain, just the way I like it. No toppings, no frills. But when the cashier rang up the total, I was hit with a price tag that nearly knocked me off my feet – $29! For two small, half-filled cups of yogurt, no less. Yes, the yogurt was great, but so is Menchie’s, and it’s certainly more wallet friendly. I shudder to think what the bill might have been if I’d dared to add some toppings! Undeterred, I gave it another shot, hoping the first experience was a fluke, and because, well, it’s conveniently close to home and I do have a bit of a sweet tooth. But alas, the second visit was no different – $30 for two small, plain cups of yogurt. While the yogurt is undoubtedly tasty, the price is, in my humble opinion, simply outrageous. Perhaps I’m just a bit old-school, but the idea of paying $30 for two small yogurts is tough for me. Though, who knows? Maybe one day this will be the new norm – after all, I have friends who shell out $20 for a green drink at Erewhon! The times, they are indeed a-changing’. Maybe, just maybe I'm getting older … And as if that weren’t enough for the “you-just-never-know” file, it seems the much-anticipated Anahita Persian Cafe and Bistro, 14531 Ventura, which was supposed to open its doors on Ventura Blvd, won’t be opening after all. Something must have gone terribly wrong because there’s now a “For Lease” sign hanging where their dreams were supposed to flourish. Another twist of fate in the unpredictable world of business. You just never know!

For the last 30 years, whenever my family craved Chinese food for dinner, there was only one choice for us: Bamboo at 14010 Ventura Blvd. We’ve loved the food for more than three decades and became personal friends with Joseph, the owner. He maintained a beautiful restaurant filled with art and warmth. Like many restaurateurs in California, owning and operating a restaurant can be extremely challenging. The cost of goods and the continually rising minimum wage make it a daunting experience. After many years, Joseph has sold his restaurant! It is now in new hands and will remain a Chinese restaurant. I look forward to meeting the new owner and trying the food. I wish Joseph great joy in this new chapter of his life and wish the new owner good luck with his restaurant! While there’s change at Bamboo, The GameChanger Brewhouse will officially open on August 17th! They’ve had a soft opening for a few weeks, but the grand opening is on the 17th. The GameChanger is a family-friendly sports bar with a lunch and dinner menu, as well as a brunch menu on weekends. They’re open from 4 PM to 10 PM on weeknights and from 11 AM to 11 PM on weekends. It’s a great place to watch basketball, football, and baseball games with your kids. With other families bringing their children, it could also be a fun place for younger sports fans to connect. Including the entire family in a fun way to watch the games and have a meal seems like a great idea! 13730 Ventura Blvd, www.GameChargerBrewhouse.com. Pret a Manger opened their first shop in London in 1986, and now they’re open at12184 Ventura Blvd in Studio City. Their mission has always been to serve freshly made food and good organic coffee. Their food is made fresh every day, and whatever doesn’t sell is donated to their food rescue partners. The founders of Pret set up a global charity in 1995 to help break the cycle of homelessness by donating their unsold food to local rescue organizations. They offer great sandwiches and fresh salad bowls with protein. It’s all quick and ready to go – just walk in and choose which bowl or sandwich appeals to you. There are 62 Pret locations in the United States, 498 in England, and 291 in London alone, with 58 on the East Coast, 2 in Chicago, and now 2 in Los Angeles. They must be doing something right. I look forward to trying it because I love great ready-to-go food! 12184 Ventura Blvd, www.Pret.com. Just the other day, I needed two light bulbs for the lights in my kitchen, so I went to Lightbulbs Unlimited on Ventura Blvd near Van Nuys. I was disappointed to see that they’ve closed their Sherman Oaks store after nearly 20 years. They are now only located in Santa Monica and West Hollywood. It was so nice having them in our neighborhood. Like many others, I took the convenience of having a store like that for granted. Now, we’ll have to go online to find those more uncommon light bulbs. Darn! Another one bites the dust.

This month, the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association is embarking on a very special community meeting at the Valley Relics Museum on June 19th. As someone who grew up in the Sherman Oaks and could be considered a bit of a relic myself, I cherish the rich history of what the Valley once was and continue to admire what it is today. Ventura Boulevard is not the boulevard I remember from the 60s. We’ve lost many iconic places: the Sportsman's Lodge, Maxson’s Drugstore, and Weddington Golf and Tennis. Yet, despite these losses, our community continues to thrive. We still have enduring businesses that remain pillars of our community. Take, for example, the Valley Inn. Established in Sherman Oaks in 1947, it continues to serve delicious meals to this day. Tony’s Liquor, also opened in Sherman Oaks in 1947, has been a community staple for generations. I fondly recall buying candy at Tony’s on my way to Dixie Canyon Elementary School. Baxter Northup Music originally opened in downtown LA near the Angels Flight, then moved to Sherman Oaks in 1950. They hold the title of the oldest continuously operating music store in California. I took drum lessons there in the mid-60s, and it remains a vibrant place to take music lessons and purchase instruments and sheet music. The Antique Mall, which opened 42 years ago, almost closed a few months ago but thankfully remains open. Casa Vega has been serving the Sherman Oaks community since 1956, becoming an enduring landmark in our lives. Antonio's Pizza has been spinning dough since 1957, and Sy Devore moved to Sherman Oaks in 1962, starting at Fashion Square before relocating twice on Ventura Boulevard. Vitello’s, which opened in 1964, is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and still serves great Italian food. Despite the changes, much has remained the same. Babies are still born every day, and the Juvenile Shop, which has been around since 1977, continues to welcome new mothers and their babies. These vibrant stores, restaurants, and shops might someday join their commercial brethren at the Valley Relics Museum, but for now, they are alive, well, and thriving in Sherman Oaks.

The Brewhouse is filled with high-definition screens to watch your favorite games. They serve brunch, lunch, and dinner along with a huge list of amazing beers. They serve salads, pizzas, burgers, chicken, and meats. In recent months, the Comings and Goings column has been expanded to include a new section called “Staying”. This month, I am delighted to share news about another Sherman Oaks establishment that will remain open – the Antique Mall located on Ventura Blvd at Hazeltine. Originally slated for closure due to the impending sale of the building, the owner has made the decision not to sell, ensuring that the Antique Mall will continue to serve the community. When I wrote about the closing of this landmark establishment about six months ago, I received so many responses of disappointment from the community. This enduring indoor venue boasts more than 100 dealers and has been a cherished part of Sherman Oaks since 1982. The decision to keep their doors open is undoubtedly welcome news for both proprietors and patrons alike. 14034 Ventura Blvd, (818) 906-0338, www.soantiquemall.com In addition to this, residents can anticipate the arrival of Cava, a Mediterranean restaurant, in the vicinity of Anajak Thai on Ventura Blvd. Cava offers a contemporary culinary experience centered around healthy fast-casual dining. With a mission to infuse heart, health, and humanity into their food, Cava embodies the Mediterranean way of life, where food serves as a focal point for culture and connection. Currently operating in 25 states, Cava will soon be extending its presence to Sherman Oaks. Having personally dined at their Westwood location, I eagerly anticipate the convenience of having a Cava establishment in our own neighborhood. 14708 Ventura Blvd, (747) 788-5794, www.Cava.com For those unfamiliar with Valley Current, allow me to introduce this invaluable resource for staying informed about the latest developments in the San Fernando Valley. Originating on the Westside, Matt and Jamie recognized a void in the news coverage of their community and established the blog and newsletter, Westside Current, which quickly amassed more than 200,000 subscribers. With a commitment to keeping readers “in the know” and “in the now”, they delve deeply into community issues, providing comprehensive coverage that matters to residents. Upon relocating to the San Fernando Valley, Jamie and Matt identified a similar need for enhanced local news coverage and thus Valley Current was born. As the Valley’s premier hyper-local news source, Valley Current engages in investigative reporting, delivers breaking news, and shares stories that resonate with Valley residents. Their dedication to covering neighborhood issues fills a crucial gap in local journalism, and I commend Jamie and Matt for their

Exciting developments are afoot in our neighborhood, marking shifts in our local landscape. Let’s delve into the latest updates. Mulberry Row, a cherished establishment at 13327 Ventura Boulevard near Fulton has been a stalwart presence since 2005 under the stewardship of owner Robin Snyder, a talented floral designer. Originally renowned for its floral arrangements, Mulberry Row expanded its offerings in 2021. The store now boasts a delightful gift boutique featuring handcrafted jewelry, candles, lotions, and vintage clothing. Local artists adorn the space with their artwork, adding to its charm. The monthly Happy Hour, every First Friday, offers a 15-percent discount on all items – a testament to Mulberry Row’s evolution into a comprehensive destination for floral, gift, home goods, and vintage clothing needs. Kudos to Robin for her dedication to Sherman Oaks, making Mulberry Row a beloved establishment sure to warm hearts, especially with Valentine’s Day approaching. Tacos 1986, originating from a humble taco cart, has rapidly ascended to cult-favorite status, now boasting its eighth location in Sherman Oaks. Located at 15030 Ventura Boulevard east of Sepulveda, Tacos 1986 tantalizes with its Tijuana-style offerings, notably its charcoal-grilled carne asada. While the lines may be daunting, the promise of unique tacos and quesadillas beckons, promising a flavorful experience worth the wait. In recent memory, the closure of TJ MAXX at 14651 Ventura Boulevard opposite Medici’s Pizza left a void attributed to rampant theft and homelessness issues. However, the arrival of Burlington Coat Factory breathes new life into the space, offering discounts of up to 60 percent on branded merchandise across various categories. While some may reminisce about TJ MAXX, the arrival of Burlington Coat Factory injects vitality into the neighborhood, a welcome addition to Sherman Oaks’ commercial landscape. The decline of local newsstands is a noticeable trend, with only one remaining on the corner of Laurel Canyon and Ventura. The evolution of the Van Nuys Boulevard newsstand at Ventura into a cell phone accessory kiosk called iStand Bazaar highlights changing consumer habits, emphasizing convenience and competitive pricing. Despite the nostalgia for traditional newsstands, the adaptability of businesses like iStand reflects the evolving retail landscape. Samos Café and Grill, located at the junction of Ventura Boulevard and Woodman Avenue, has finally opened its doors after extensive renovations. Boasting Mediterranean cuisine steeped in ancestral recipes, Samos offers a tantalizing array of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. From smoked salmon toast to traditional dishes like hummus and falafel, Samos Café and Grill promises a culinary journey worth savoring – a welcome addition to our neighborhood. And Samos is SOHA’s Restaurant of the Month for February so you can come to our community meeting and sample their food in person. Lastly, the anticipation builds as Kohl’s prepares to occupy the former Bed Bath and Beyond located at 12555 Ventura Boulevard, promising new retail possibilities for our neighborhood. As our neighborhood evolves, these developments reflect the resilience and dynamism of the Sherman Oaks and Studio City commercial landscape, offering exciting prospects for residents and visitors alike.

Wishing you all a joyful, healthy, and peaceful New Year! As we step into 2024, the global landscape poses challenges with conflicts like the Israeli-Hamas war and the ongoing situation in Ukraine. However, amidst these concerns, positive signs emerge, with mortgage rates decreasing, a significant upswing in the stock market, and a vibrant economy. Hopeful for a year of prosperity, positive change, and above all, peace. Exciting developments in the neighborhood include Arte Bottega, a new landscaping and pool business on the corner at 13336 Ventura Blvd, at the corner of Nagle. Set to offer high-end outdoor lighting, beautiful planters, furniture, plants, and pool-related services, it promises to be a go-to place for enhancing outdoor spaces. Venturing into culinary delights, we explored Coley’s Authentic Jamaican Cuisine in Sherman Oaks, a gem we discovered through a news segment. The dining experience was exceptional, with delectable seafood fritters, chicken curry, jerk chicken, and red snapper. Coley’s, rooted in LA since 1982, continues its legacy in Sherman Oaks, and we’re excited to feature them as our Restaurant of the Month in January. They are located at 14056 Burbank on the corner of Hazeltine and Burbank (www.TheOriginalcoleysllc.com). On a different note, the former Hamburger Hamlet location, closed for a few years, seems poised for a new restaurant tenant. Anticipation builds for what’s to come … I’ll keep you posted. While strolling along Ventura Blvd between Greenbush and Sunnyslope, we marveled at the beautiful trees planted over two decades ago. However, dismay struck when we noticed a tree in front of NexGen Fitness had been significantly altered, presumably for better visibility of their signage. Unfortunately, this move garnered negative attention, as the community laments the loss of a once-majestic tree. As we embrace the new year, let’s hope for positive transformations and a flourishing community.

This column regularly highlights the latest openings and closures in our community, fondly referred to as Comings and Goings. Unfortunately, the recent incident involving the amazing Mark’s Garden at 13838 Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks falls into the latter category, but for a rather disheartening reason – an act of arson. Just a few weeks ago, this beloved floral haven succumbed to flames ignited by an arsonist as part of a series of fires in the San Fernando Valley. Mark’s Garden, a longstanding establishment with a rich history dating back over 40 years, has been an integral part of our community since its humble beginnings as Ray's Affordable Flowers in 1982. The devastation is palpable, considering the countless beautiful floral arrangements they’ve crafted over the years, even gracing events like my own wedding 29 years ago. Mark’s Garden’s reputation extends beyond our community, catering to high-profile clients such as Beyoncé, Madonna, and Oprah Winfrey, and earning the prestigious role of the official florist for the Academy Awards Governors Ball for more than three decades. In the wake of this tragedy, I reached out to Mark’s Garden to express my condolences and inquire about their future plans. Despite the closure of their Ventura storefront, Mark’s Garden assured me that business is proceeding as usual, operating out of their Tarzana warehouse. While the timeline for their return to Sherman Oaks remains uncertain, the commitment to rebuild and resume operations in our area is unwavering. For those who wish to support Mark’s Garden during this challenging time, orders can still be placed via phone or their website. Contact them at (818) 906-1718 or visit www.Marksgarden.com. On a concerning note, the arsonist responsible for this devastation, a 38-year-old woman, had been arrested the week prior for a series of fires in the Los Feliz area. Shockingly, THIS ARSONIST WAS RELEASED WITHOUT BAIL, only to strike again in Sherman Oaks. This highlights a critical need for both improved support for individuals with such destructive tendencies and accountability for our elected officials. As we approach the upcoming March election, let’s carefully consider the positions of those we elect to office and advocate for necessary changes in our community.

Many years ago, you might fondly recall that iconic television commercial where an elderly lady exclaimed, “Where’s the Beef?” Well, it seems our neighborhoods have echoed a similar sentiment lately. However, times have changed, and an abundance of red meat options is making its way to our area. On Ventura Boulevard in Studio City, right next to Philz Coffee, “Shake Shack” is set to open its doors. Their custom 100 percent Angus beef blend burgers have sparked a sensation. They proudly offer hormone-free, antibiotic-free, humanely raised cattle grazed in the USA. Additionally, the owners of Taisho and Casita are diligently working on bringing our first steakhouse to Sherman Oaks. Though the exact opening date remains a bit uncertain, it appears to be on the horizon. And for those who savor the delectable steaks served at Mistral, exciting news awaits – a new private dining room accommodating up to 26 guests is in the works. While I personally steer clear of red meat, many friends and family members are eagerly anticipating these carnivorous dining options in our neighborhood. A noticeable trend is emerging not only locally but possibly nationwide. The former Sy Devore location on Ventura Boulevard near Western Bagel is transforming into “PAUSE”. PAUSE is akin to ARTHA, which recently opened on Ventura in the former GAP spot. Both establishments offer a sanctuary to hit the pause button and unwind. They provide contemporary holistic solutions to bolster immunity and support physical and mental rejuvenation. Among their offerings is float therapy – an experience that immerses you in a meditative float tank, guiding you through a journey of serenity, recovery, and revitalization. This trend could be a response to the collective stress society has endured, stemming from events like 9/11, political divisions, and, of course, the ongoing pandemic. These last few decades have indeed posed their share of challenges. If you’re seeking a different route to relaxation, keep an eye out for Jax’s Studio City, opening soon on Ventura Boulevard just before Whitsett. This sports bar is the brainchild of two stars from the podcast “When Reality Hits” – Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright. It promises to be a neighborhood sports bar with intriguing offerings like Jax’s grandmother’s secret beer cheese recipe. They’re also planning a host of events, including drag bingo, football nights, karaoke viewing parties, and gatherings to watch various reality shows. For those unfamiliar, Jax and Brittany are a married couple with a two-year-old son. It looks like this spot will be a lively place to unwind in the neighborhood, if floating in a tank isn’t your thing. Eater LA has recently bestowed its accolades upon The Rendition Room in Studio City, hailing it as one of the finest speakeasies in Los Angeles. The article, aptly titled “Some of LA’s Best Cocktails Are Hidden Behind a Bookshelf at This Valley Speakeasy,” shines a spotlight on the remarkable mixologist, Scott Warren. To explore the full story and delve into the world of this Valley gem, read the entire Eater LA article at: https://la.eater.com/2023/9/11/23863248/rendition-room-speakeasy-studio-city-scott-warren-bartender-feature. Lastly, for those whose stress relief comes in the form of something sweet, there’s a new cake shop called De’licee Cakes opening near Western Bagel on Ventura Boulevard. A decade ago, this family embarked on a cake journey in Moscow, dubbing it “Elite Cakes.” As their success blossomed, they harbored dreams of expanding to America. Through hard work and unwavering determination, they rebranded themselves as De’licee Cakes. Their cakes are veritable works of art, and it appears that an exceptionally special cake shop is gracing our neighborhood. Anticipation is building, and I can’t wait to try it out!

Recently, our community and the global stage were struck by a profound tragedy, as Laura Ann Carlton, the proprietor of Mag.Pi in Studio City, was shot and lost her life while proudly displaying a Pride Flag at her Mag.Pi store in Lake Arrowhead. This heart-wrenching incident prompts us to reflect on the prevalence of hatred and the alarming accessibility of firearms in our society. Laura exemplified courage by standing up for love and acceptance, only to meet an unimaginable fate. The weight of this loss is felt by all of us, and our hearts go out to her surviving family – her husband and nine children. As we grieve her passing, we are confronted with the fracture within our current society that allowed such a terrible event to unfold. Shifting our attention to local matters, the Sherman Oaks Antique Mall, a staple on Ventura Boulevard across from Ralphs at Hazeltine for over four decades, is set to close its doors. A hub for vintage enthusiasts, the mall has been a treasure trove of dealers offering vintage decor, furniture, jewelry, and collectibles since 1982. The closure marks the end of an era, leaving a void in our community and a sense of nostalgia for the rare and captivating vintage finds it housed. Amid the somber backdrop, new blooms of hope emerge in Sherman Oaks in the form of vibrant floral boutiques. While Mark’s Garden has long been a local favorite, two newcomers are adding a fresh twist to the floral scene. Purple Mood Flowers, an innovative boutique artisan flower shop near SOTO on Ventura Boulevard, offers a creative selection for weddings, events, or those days that need a touch of beauty. On the north side of Ventura, Friends and Roses extends its unique custom arrangements for various occasions, providing a much-needed burst of color. Both shops offer the convenience of same-day delivery, promising to brighten even the gloomiest days. Turning to culinary delights, Sherman Oaks welcomes novel dining experiences. Karma Sushi bar, situated on Ventura Boulevard at Cedros, bridges modern upscale dining with traditional Japanese hospitality. The menu and ambiance reflect this harmonious fusion. Twinty Cafe, an enticing addition near Sunnyslope, caters to breakfast lovers with a selection of favorites ranging from pancakes and waffles to smoothies and coffees, accompanied by paninis and salads. Opening its doors at 7:30 am and closing at 4 pm, Twinty Cafe promises a casual and flavorful local option. Steering toward sips and bites, Studio City bids farewell to Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, making way for Alfreds Coffee on Ventura Boulevard near Coldwater. Alfreds Coffee, renowned for its quality, beckons coffee enthusiasts to indulge in its offerings. Additionally, Prince Street Pizza has finally debuted, a slice I personally relished during my visit to New York in June. Located near Joans on Third on Ventura, the long-awaited Prince Street Pizza promises a delectable experience worth the wait. For those seeking an active respite, the recently launched CycleBar at La Reina Plaza introduces invigorating 30- to 45-minute group cycle sessions set to music. This rhythmic cycling experience accommodates all skill levels, encouraging participants to tap into their inner strength and determination while grooving to the beat. In the midst of change and loss, our community perseveres, finding solace in new beginnings and embracing the tapestry of experiences that color our lives in our wonderful community.

Maxsons, the beloved drugstore that occupied the corner of Hazeltine and Ventura for decades, has left a lasting impact on our community. When they closed their doors a few years ago, it was a bittersweet moment for many of us. However, if you’ve driven past their old location across from Ralphs recently, you might have noticed the transformation – the building has been modernized and now boasts a contemporary look. This change is in preparation for the arrival of AVLAU a high-end furniture, flooring, lighting, tile, doors, and ironwork store (avlau.com),. AVLAU prides itself on true design, understanding lifestyle, and offering a range of styles from modern classics to contemporary minimalism. The store’s commitment to turning visions into reality is evident in their selection of top-quality materials and timeless trends. AVLAU is set to open its doors at the beginning of September, and my wife, Jane, and I are thrilled about this addition to our community, as we are passionate about home design. We will however miss going to the pharmacy and little post office where everyone knew your name. Sherman Oaks has been experiencing a coffee shop boom lately, with several new establishments joining the scene alongside the familiar Starbucks and Coffee Bean. One of the noteworthy additions is The Boy and The Bear – Coffee Roastery (theboyandthebear.com), founded in 2012 as a pop-up shop in Colombia, with a mission to exclusively serve Colombian coffees. The founder, Andrewas Pineros, moved to Los Angeles in 2013 to establish his brand in a city known for its coffee savvy. The Boy and The Bear has already opened three locations in Redondo Beach, Culver City, and Westchester, and the fourth one in Sherman Oaks promises a strong Colombian brew. Another exciting spot is Ideology Coffee, taking over the old Starbucks location on Ventura Boulevard next to On the Thirty. Studio City, too, has embraced the coffee culture with various coffee shops like Civil Coffee, Philz Coffee, Bluestone Lane, Red Window Coffee, Alfreds, Blue Bottle, and the new store Coffee and Plants. While some comings have been smooth, others have faced challenges. The Burger Bar restaurant, for instance, appeared to open overnight, but in reality, it was merely a name change from The Fish Grill. Unfortunately, Breadlok in Studio City did not fare well and had to close down all its locations due to financial struggles caused by the pandemic. Hopefully, they will return one day with their fantastic gluten-free bread options. On a more positive note, the old Kriser’s Dog and Grooming store has been revamped and reopened as Earthwise Nutrition Center and Grooming spa, offering similar services as before. In Studio City, the space previously occupied by Mazza’s upstairs next to Tender Greens has now become The Daily Outpost, a new restaurant owned by The Daily Grill. The transition from The Daily Grill to a fish house, and then to Shanghai Rose, brought changes to this mall on the second floor, and now The Daily Outpost aims to find its place. With The Daily Grill’s reputation for quality, I’m hopeful that this new venture will be successful. As someone who enjoys trying out new eateries, I’m eager to visit The Daily Outpost when they open in mid-August. Additionally, I’m eagerly awaiting the opening of Prince Street Pizza in the area. Overall, it’s evident that our communities are evolving and adapting with new businesses and concepts. It’s exciting to see these changes unfold, and I’m looking forward to exploring all the fresh offerings in our vibrant neighborhood!

As a born and bred resident of Sherman Oaks, I am a Sherman Okian and intimately familiar with the area where Rive Gauche operated at Ventura and Hazeltine until its closure in 2018. The owners decided to return to France to indulge in wine, escargot, and relaxation on the French Riviera. Excitingly, there is now a new establishment in the courtyard where Rive Gauche used to be – Bacari Sherman Oaks – a Mediterranean restaurant specializing in small plates, craft drinks, and esoteric wines. This is the Bacari group’s sixth location. On Fridays and Saturdays, patrons can enjoy live entertainment in their parlor. The space looks fantastic, and I personally can’t wait to visit. (https://www.eatwithbacari.com) Another notable addition in the same courtyard is Schatzki’s Bakery. This charming bakery has been attracting a crowd, and when I visited today, the courtyard was filled with both sunlight and people enjoying coffee and baked goods. It’s truly revitalizing to see the area come alive once again. (https://www.schatzisbakery.com) A unique store called Dresscue is set to open in Studio City for those of us who have garments that we no longer wear but are too good to simply give away. You rent a rack and sell your preloved clothing, while making some extra money. This concept aligns with the principles of sustainability, which I find incredibly appealing. You can reserve a rack and price your items online. It’s a fantastic idea, and I’m particularly excited because my wife loves it too. Dresscue is something to look forward to in Studio City. (https://www.dresscueco.com) In my column, I often report businesses closing or owners retiring, leaving behind a void in the community. Sometimes, businesses simply move to new locations. However, when an unforeseen event disrupts the status quo, it’s a different story. This week, tragedy struck Augustine Wine Bar in Sherman Oaks as a fire broke out in their kitchen, resulting in the destruction of the kitchen, roof, and a portion of their wine collection. Augustine will not reopen for at least a year, and we’ll greatly miss this beloved neighborhood spot. To support their staff during rebuilding, they have established a GoFundMe campaign. While we bid farewell to Augustine for now, the community eagerly awaits their rebuilding and the reopening of their doors. We look forward to raising a glass of their amazing wine in celebration when they’re back in business. (https://www.augustinewinebar.com)

Spring has arrived, and it seems like summer is just around the corner. Flowers are blooming and filling the air with sweet scents. In addition to the traditional springtime treats, there is a new taste treat in the neighborhood – Mrs Chips Cookies. The shop, located on Sepulveda Boulevard near Whole Foods Market, opened in mid-March, although they have been selling their cookies online for years. KTLA featured them as a TOP PICK for the holidays in 2019. It has taken three years for them to open their first brick-and-mortar bakery. Six different types of Chocolate Chip cookies are available, along with a Nutella, an Oatmeal Raisin, and a Snickerdoodle Chocolate Chip cookie. Customers can try one or buy a box of these delicious cookies, which are crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. They are all hand-topped with Maldon Sea Salt flakes from England. Mrs Chips Cookies also sell by the dozen or two-dozen, and they serve coffee as well. They offer a vanilla ice cream sundae for those looking for a different kind of sweet treat. (https://mrschipscookies.com/) Our daughter is a vegetarian and when she was younger it was sometimes hard finding a restaurant that she loved. One of her favorite places was Kung Pao China Bistro where we would go to have the vegetarian orange shrimp. They had been open for many years but sadly Covid hit them hard, and they shut their doors a couple years ago. In their old location is now a new totally meatless option … For those who love tacos and are looking for a vegan option, Sugar Taco on Ventura Blvd is worth a visit. After successfully launching their flagship plant-based eatery on Melrose four years ago, this vegan Mexican restaurant features delicious tacos, fantastic nachos, and tasty agua frescas. Check out the Churros for dessert and don’t miss Taco Tuesdays! Female-owned and the owner says it was always her goal to empower women investors. The menu is great and it’s a nice addition to the neighborhood. My wife, my vegetarian daughter, and I went there last night for dinner. We all had the 3-taco plate with rice and beans along with a margarita. And of course, the churro donut for dessert! We all loved it and will be going back! (https://sugartaco.com/) Boneyard Bistro on Ventura Boulevard has been one of the top restaurants in Sherman Oaks for the past 20 years. The barbecue is consistently excellent, with options like brisket, tri-tip, baby back ribs, pulled pork, and chicken. Last week, I attended a meeting hosted by the owner, Aaron, who provided food from Boneyard. During our conversation, I discovered that Monday nights are Fried Chicken Night at Boneyard. It’s a sensation with one-half fried chicken served either Nashville Hot or regular. Sides include coleslaw, baked beans, potato salad, fried Mac and Cheese, or fries. I highly recommend it and suggest getting there early since they often sell out by 7 pm. (https://www.boneyardbistro.com/) Due to the pandemic and many people working from home, many large companies are scaling back unused office space. For example, the Berkshire Hathaway office at Fulton and Ventura has been nearly empty for the last year, and has therefore been closed. There is still a Berkshire Hathaway office in Sherman Oaks and Ventura near Mendocino Farms. Last but definitely not least is my final Coming and Going – the illegal billboard is back on the south wall of the old Hamburger Hamlet Building on Van Nuys Boulevard just north of Ventura Boulevard. Now as you drive on Ventura Boulevard you can look up and see another illegal sign advertising Coke. SOHA reports this every time to the Council Office and then building and safety sends out a letter and after six months to a year the sign comes down. Meanwhile the building owner collects hundreds of thousands of dollars from these illegal signs, and at most gets a misdemeanor citation from the city. This is happening all over the city and the city does nothing to fix it. They would rather have us taxpayers pay more in taxes to help fight the homeless, the potholes, and all the other issues than doing their jobs. In any other crime when does the criminal get to keep their ill-gotten loot?

A unique new store has opened at Westfield’s Fashion Square. Located near Macy’s first floor, The Memorabilia Network (MTN) offers a full-service concierge for collectors and their collections, with an emphasis on sports-related and Hollywood memorabilia. Whether you’re interested in buying or selling memorabilia, MTN has you covered. They offer appraisal services with numerous qualified experts on hand, or they can arrange for a private sale of your collection. MTN will also evaluate and manage collections within your portfolio. MTN’s CEO/President, Harlan Werner, has years of experience in the industry, having consulted or handled the sale of many pieces of iconic pop culture memorabilia. Muhammad Ali and his wife entrusted Harlan to help market and reintroduce Ali to the corporate marketplace. They became such great friends that Harlan Werner was a pallbearer at Ali’s funeral. He also was the executive producer of the movie “Tyson”. His expertise and passion for memorabilia make MTN an excellent destination for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Another recent addition to Sherman Oaks is a new EXER care facility, located in the old Marie Callendar’s location at 14743 Ventura Boulevard west of Kester. It is great to know that there is more convenient medical care available in the area. Singer-songwriter Leona Lewis, along with her two partners, will be bringing a second COFFEE AND PLANTS to Studio City later this month in the old Color Camp location at 12334 Ventura Boulevard. The trio’s first shop opened in Pasadena in 2019 and is known for its beautiful plant-filled setting, fully vegan menu, and amazing display of plants. The shop’s focus is on sustainable and plant-based products, and they aim to help the world move away from dairy consumption. They have a goal to plant a tree with the National Forest Foundation for every hundred cups of coffee sold, and they also donate to the Hopefield Animal Sanctuary. COFFEE AND PLANTS is an excellent destination for those looking for a delicious and sustainable coffee experience. Panini Kabob Grill is opening soon at Westfield’s Fashion Square. This is their seventh location, and a testament to the quality of their food and service. I am human. I messed up ... Let me start off this month’s Cs&Gs by apologizing to the wonderful owners of the Green Apple China Bistro for mistakenly writing last month that Fat Sal’s was coming to Studio City in the location where Green Apple is located. I was wrong, and it was sloppy on my part. So, I want to set the record straight. This fantastic Chinese restaurant, which has been a mainstay in Studio City for over 13 years, is not going anywhere. It is open and continues to serve its delicious food to our community as it has since 2010. It is the only location for this wonderful family-run restaurant. From the response that my error created, I know that this family and their restaurant are loved by many people. So, no worries, the Green Apple China Bistro is alive and well and serving daily in Studio City! Fat Sal's will be opening in the old Jamba Juice location right next door! (http://www.greenapplechinabistro.com) Say goodbye to Feinstein’s at Vitello’s and say hello to the Velvet Martini Lounge, which will be opening either the middle or end of February upstairs at Vitello’s. Step back in time and experience the glamour of vintage Hollywood with the new Rat-Pack era cocktail lounge/piano bar. There will be live music nightly, delicious food and classic cocktails with a twist! You'll be able to immerse yourself in the ambiance of a bygone era. Whether you’re looking for a romantic night out or just a fun night with friends, the Velvet Martini Lounge will be the perfect place to frequent. Seating will be comfortable couches and chairs with a swanky 50s style. (https://www.vitellosrestaurant.com) ARTHA, located where The Gap used to be, is a yoga and wellness sanctuary opening in April. ARTHA means meaningful wealth derived from the power of health along with a happy body and mind. They are considered an important aim of human life in Hinduism. ARTHA will be offering comprehensive rejuvenation and healing therapies to renew your mind, body, and soul. They offer yoga, meditation, massage, and cryo facial treatments. They’ll be offering state-of-the-art body treatments from muscle relaxation, facial regeneration to non-invasive body sculpting. They’ll have a float tank and an infrared sauna. There are therapies, classes, and treatments. This will be their second LA location after opening their first on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood. Sounds truly interesting! And most definitely worth the experience. (https://www.artha.la) Maybe after a wellness experience at ARTHA, it might be fun to walk over to Backyard Bowls on Little Ventura right off Laurel Canyon. Backyard Bowls is described as a revolutionary eatery specializing in acai bowls, hot porridges, smoothies, and more. They provide high-quality fast-meal options. Their bowls are mostly organic, and they serve only food that they believe is good for you. Real food. Backyard Bowls opened their doors in downtown Santa Barbara in 2008. Their bowls must be good because since opening in 2008, they now have five locations with the sixth open in Studio City. Looks like a place that deserves a try ... or a bowl. (http://www.backyardbowls.com) I’m Verklempt! Have you heard of the Oy Bar? It opened its doors last year where the Oyster House used to be on Moorpark just east of Whitsett. It’s a casual bar where you can grab a solid cocktail along with a pastrami quesadilla covered with a crispy gruyere jalapeno crust on the outside. There’s a deconstructed borscht which is served cold and made with a beet and aji Amarillo granita and is basically served as a dessert. But from what I hear the burger is not to be missed! So, I know I’ve got to make my way over to the Oy Bar sometime soon, at least before Passover! Oy! (http://oybarla.com)

If you love travel yet can’t get away right now, you might want to just travel over to Ventura Blvd where you will be transported on a journey of the senses. There’s a beautiful candle store on Ventura called Voyage et Cie. It’s been there for years. It was located behind Pain Quotidian and is now located where the old Canyon Beachwear store used to be. This store is the ultimate blend of travel, design, and scents – with emphasis on the scents. The candles are not only beautiful but also evoke the scents of places that you have probably already been to on your travels. The soy candles use no paraffin and are primarily created with coconut or apricot oils and beeswax. Every city in the world has its own particular scent, whether it is a plant, flower, church, or building. The fragrances here are often named after the place which is evocative of that scent. I think someday I’m going to ask the owner Melanie what the scent would be for Sherman Oaks. One of my favorites is her Los Angeles candle. If you’re longing to get away, visit Voyage et Cie and I promise that you will be transported. Speaking of Aromas … Fat Sal’s has been serving Southern California for more than ten years, and now they’re finally coming to Studio City. Jerry Charles Ferrara is one of the owners and you might remember him as the actor known for his role as Turtle on the HBO comedy series Entourage. Fat Sal’s new location is where the Chinese Restaurant Green Apple used to be near California Pizza Kitchen. It’s a sandwich shop like no other. Just by the name you might worry about not being able to stay health conscious there, and it might be tough. But according to the owner they try to have a menu that appeals to everyone. While most of their food can definitely be classified as guilty pleasure or indulgent, they also have a good selection of healthy menu items like salads, wraps and plant-based items. Yet when they put mozzarella sticks, macaroni and cheese, or chicken fingers on your sandwich you know you’re in trouble – although it might be good trouble. So, if you’re looking to share a food adventure, you might want to try Fat Sal’s. Maybe fast the day before! Most of us have over the past few years become more ecologically thoughtful with our concern for our planet. The new Re_grocery store in Studio City is definitely a place to check out. “Re_” stands for rethink/reuse/refill and it’s a grocery store. You bring your glass bottles and containers to fill them up with products – dry goods, spices, tea, oils, eggs, vegan dairy/meat alternatives, cleansers, soaps, lotions, and produce. This package-free grocery store makes it easier to stay conscious about the environment, although I’ve heard that it’s a bit pricey. Re_grocery is a zero-waste grocery store committed to making sustainable shopping convenient and affordable. Their mission is to do better than recycling and to say no to plastic altogether. They strive to source only the highest-quality organic, non-GMO, clean products – all plastic free. You bring your own containers as I mentioned before and can shop a selection of over 500 refillable bulk goods. Their items range from herbs and spices to pastas and cereals, to oils, vinegars, and honey. This is certainly an interesting grocery concept and time will tell as to how sustainable a concept it is. And now for something completely different. We've gone from beautiful scents to great food and now art. The Art Gallery Van Eaton which was based in Sherman Oaks for many many years has now moved to Studio City on Ventura Blvd as well. They specialize in animation art. If you’re Disney animation art follower, this is your place. They have an amazing gallery of animation art for sale, and they also oftentimes have art auctions. Their focus of the gallery is on popular culture and Disneyland art. Of course, they have superhero art as well. An interesting addition to Studio City, and a place that you might want to visit. Our town is thriving and changing, and new things are being offered every day. I look forward to 2023 and better days ahead for all of us.
